Las mujeres que trabajaban en el área de cirugía del Hospital de las Cinco Llagas de Sevilla durante los siglos XVI al XVIII / Women working in the area of surgery at the Hospital of the Five Wounds of Seville during the XVIth to XVIIIth century / Las mujeres que trabajaban na área de cirugía do Hospital das Cinco Llagas de Sevilha durante os XVI XVI al XVIII

El objetivo de este trabajo es conocer el área de cirugía del Hospital de las Cinco Llagas y el conjunto de personas que trabajaban en él, principalmente, las enfermeras de cirugía desde 1500 a 1808. En cuanto a la metodología, la primera fase del estudio comprendió una revisión archivística de fuentes primarias de diversos archivos y bibliográfica de fuentes secundarias para conocer el estado de la cuestión. Acto seguido se he procedido a interpretar y analizar los datos. Los resultados principales nos indican que esta área sólo recibía a mujeres heridas, que eran internadas en la sala de cirugía, llamada de San Juan, donde recibían el cuidado de la madre cirujana y sus doncellas quienes seguían las prescripciones dadas por el cirujano. Los instrumentos manejados en esta área eran las vendas, pinzas, jeringas, tijeras, cuchillos, sierras, hierros para cauterizar e incluso un instrumento ginecológico llamado el speculum matricis. Los resultados indican que este hospital podría ser un reflejo del desarrollo de la cirugía y de su personal en los hospitales castellanos de la Edad Moderna. Área que se encontraría bastante estructurada a fines del siglo XVI en el que destaca el binomio cirujano y enfermera de cirugía y el papel crucial que desempeño esta última en la atención del herido en un hospital castellano

The objective of this work is to know the area of surgery of the Hospital of the Five Wounds and the group of people who worked there, mainly, the surgical nurses from 1500 to 1808. Regarding the methodology, the first phase of the study included an archival review of primary sources of diverse archives and bibliographic of secondary sources to know the state of the question. Then, I proceeded to interpret and analyze the data. The main results indicate that this area only received wounded women, who were admitted to the surgery room, called San Juan, where they received the care of the surgeon mother and her maids who followed the prescriptions given by the surgeon. The instruments handled in this area were bandages, tweezers, syringes, scissors, knives, saws, irons to cauterize and even a gynecological instrument called the speculum matricis. The results indicate that this hospital could be a reflection of the development of the surgery and its personnel in the Castilian hospitals of the Modern Age. Area that would be quite structured at the end of the 16th century, in which the binomial surgeon and surgery nurse stand out and the crucial role that the latter plays in the care of the injured in a Spanish hospital

O objetivo deste trabalho é conhecer a área de cirurgia do Hospital das Cinco Llagas e o conjunto de pessoas que trabalhou em ele, principalmente, as enfermeras de cirurgia desde 1500 a 1808. En cuanto à metodologia, a primeira fase do estudo incluída uma revisão arquivística de fontes primarias de diversos arquivos e bibliografia de fontes secundarias para conhecer o estado da questão. Acto seguiu se ele procedeu a interpretar e analizar os dados. Os resultados principais nos indican que esta área só recebemos as mulheres heridas, que eram internadas na sala de cirurgia, a chamada de San Juan, onde recebemos o cuidado da mãe cirujana e as criadas que seguiam as prescrições dadas pelo cirujano. Os instrumentos manejados em esta área eram as vendas, pinzas, jeringas, tijeras, cuchillos, sierras, hierros para cauterizar e inclusive um instrumento ginecológico chamado the speculum matricis. Os resultados indican que este hospital podem ser um reflexo do desenvolvimento da cirurgia e do pessoal nos hospitais da Edad Moderna. Produção científica da enfermagem de centro cirúrgico de 2003 a 2013 / Scientific Production in Perioperative Nursing from 2003 to 2013

Identificar a produção da enfermagem de Centro Cirúrgico em português. Método: Revisão integrativa da literatura dos estudos primários indexados na base de dados Lilacs, no idioma português, utilizando o descritor ?enfermagem em Centro Cirúrgico?, publicados entre 2003 a2013, utilizando um instrumento disponível na literatura, avaliação crítica dos estudos primários incluídos, análise e síntese descritiva dos resultados da revisão. Resultados: A amostra foi constituída de 47 artigos, divididos nas categorias: assistência e segurança ao paciente (n=14), educação (n=10), gestão e administração (n=10), saúde do trabalhador (n=5), campos de atuação para o enfermeiro (n=4), comunicação e ética (n=3) e assistência aos familiares (n=1). Conclusão: As principais temáticas estudadas foram a assistência e segurança do paciente adulto, o papel de gerência e assistência do enfermeiro, o ensino da disciplina cirúrgica na graduação e os fatores que afetam a saúde da equipe de Centro Cirúrgico...

The red zone.

This simple quality initiative won the best innovation in clinical practice at the recent CEO healthcare awards gala event in the North West of Ireland. It demonstrated how a simple collaborative idea led to improving the quality and safety of care in the operating room. As practitioners we have a huge contribution to make in providing quality and safe care to our patients. It is crucial that we share knowledge and have our input recognised.

Anaesthesia.

A fascinating article on the subject of anaesthesia appeared in the BJN on the 21st January 1911. It covered its definition, some remarkable stages and effects on the patient, the anaesthetist's requirements and the preparation and care of the patient. Although anaesthetics have been in use for thousands of years it makes you feel glad that today's approach has now become so much easier and evidence based.

Before operating room nursing journals: operating room nursing in the pages of the Canadian Nurse 1940-1960.

The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) values learning from nursing history to provide a contextual perspective in understanding how past events have shaped current nursing practice. Until the publication of operating room nursing journals, Canada's national nursing journal, The Canadian Nurse, served as an educational and professional resource for those nurses working in the operating room and for nurses whose work was related to, or connected with, the operating room. A historical review of early issues of The Canadian Nurse (first published in 1905) reveals a substantial amount of content related to operating room nursing in the twenty year period, beginning in the 1940s, that predated the existence of OR specialty journals. The content was, for the time, both detailed and informative. It was through this journal that operating room nurses, indeed all Canadian nurses, learned about new advances, employment opportunities, educational programs, professional associations, and the achievements of those in the profession. Operating Room Nursing, as an isolated and quickly emerging specialty, was introduced to other nurses via items in The Canadian Nurse journal.

Reflections on a perioperative career: 1970-2008.

This paper is a personal journey through nurse training and perioperative practice. Nurse education is also explored alongside some of the social, academic and political changes that have influenced healthcare in the United Kingdom between 1966 and 2008. The views expressed are those of the author only, and the anecdotal descriptions are anonymous.

Counting as caring.

Perioperative nurses have developed specific expert nursing care practices. "Counting as caring" is certainly an approach in keeping with the perioperative nurse's guiding principle of beneficence (to do no harm). This article takes a retrospective look, from the first half of the last century through into the late 1960s, at the practice of counting and the influences that have changed it.

Developments in the RN first assistant role during the Korean War.

During times of war, demand for health care providers has stimulated increased employment of nurses and broadened the dimensions of the scope of nursing practice in the surgical arena. This article examines how the work of army nurses during the Korean War helped develop the role of the RN first assistant.

[The daily life of nurses in the Brazilian expeditionary force in the theater of operations during World War II, in Italy (1942-1945)]. / O cotidiano das enfermeiras do exército na força expedicionária brasileira (FEB) no teatro de operações da 2 Guerra Mundial, na Itália (1942-1945).

This historic-sociological study aims to analyze the daily challenges faced by army nurses in the Theater of Operations during the Second World War in Italy. The primary sources of investigation consist of three photographs taken during that period as well as testimonies by nine nurses, while literature on the subject is used as a secondary source. The discussion is supported by Pierre Bourdieu's concepts. The results show that these nurses faced the challenges of daily life at war and managed to adapt themselves to the adversities of the camping sites and wards. We infer that their daily life in this scenario not only made them overcome barriers, but also provided them with an opportunity to get to know new cultures and technologies.
